Overview

The School Sport Survey is one of the largest surveys in the world; it provides an important mechanism for Pupil Voice within the Curriculum for Wales, capturing young people's experiences of sport and physical activity.

Every response helps build an accurate national picture of how children and young people in Wales engage with sport and what support they need to enjoy being active.

This is Wales' opportunity to understand pupils' experiences, attitudes, barriers and motivations, so we can collectively plan for the future.

The survey will be open from the 13th of April – 17th of July.

  • Each school and Local Authority that takes part will receive their own tailored report.
  • Survey links were shared to every school in Wales on the 13th of April.

What Local Authorities Need to Know

The School Sport Survey runs every four years; the next will be in 2030. This is the only national opportunity for young people in your Local Authority to share their experiences and influence understanding for the next four years.

Each school and Local Authority that takes part will receive their own tailored report, helping schools and local authorities understand pupil and teacher experiences and shape local planning.

Each school's participation helps build a local, regional and national picture; insights gained from the survey can help inform your planning, investment and decision-making.

The survey also produces Official Statistics that support Welsh Government priorities, including the Well-being of Future Generations Act.

Both surveys align with the Curriculum for Wales and can support learning and teaching within the health and wellbeing area of learning and experience.

Young People Educated Other Than at School (EOTAS)

A key ask for this survey cycle was enabling young people educated in settings other than at school to participate in the 2026 School Sport Survey.

We have provided a bespoke link for EOTAS pupils to participate. You can share this link with any key contacts who can help young people educated outside of school to participate in the survey.

Important: This link must ONLY be used by young people educated in settings other than at school. Responses submitted using this link WILL NOT feature in your Local Authority's Live Monitoring Dashboard. Local Authority targets are based on schools' registered pupil numbers, and in turn, have not been calculated using EOTAS pupil data.
